A beautifully painted inscription on the chest reads:

All that serves it, I regard as a treasure.
Bestow honor upon this chest, which may bear my name,
And upon my tools, which are my rightful possession."

Dutch original translation

"Het timmeren is myn lust, ik vindt daarint grootst behagen.
En al wat daartoe dient beschouw ik als een schat.
Draag roem dus op deez kist die mynen naam mag dragen.
En myn gereedschap als myn eigendom bevat.

A museum-worthy piece, this chest is a rare and historically significant find.

A Bit of History on Dutch Tool Chests

Dutch tool chests were popular among shipbuilders in the Netherlands during the 18th and 19th centuries. Due to the wet conditions in unheated shipyard workshops, craftsmen sought a way to protect their tools from rust and moisture. The slanted lid design was an ingenious solution, preventing rain from accumulating on the chest.

Typically, these chests featured a fall-front compartment at the bottom, providing ample storage for essential shipbuilding tools. Saws were usually stored inside the lid, while larger tools occupied the top compartment, with chisels on a rack and small measuring instruments in a separate section. The bottom compartment was commonly used to store hand planes.
