Early 18th Century Dutch Colonial Solid Amboyna Wood Casket, Batavia

A rare and highly collectible Dutch Colonial casket, crafted in Batavia (present-day Jakarta, Indonesia) during the early 18th century. Expertly made from solid Amboyna wood, one of the most prized exotic hardwoods of the Dutch East Indies, the casket displays magnificent natural figuring and a rich, warm patina developed over more than three centuries.

The casket is fitted with its original white metal mounts, including the corner mounts, carrying handles and escutcheon, all displaying an attractive aged patina. The interior retains its original red lacquer finish, providing a striking contrast with the richly figured Amboyna wood.

The lock and key are later replacements, fitted during the casket's long history. Such historic replacements are commonly encountered on antique caskets that remained in regular use and do not detract from the decorative or historical appeal of the piece.
